October 31 in Zao: Discover the Togatta Kokeshi Festival and Explore the Historic Hot Spring Town
Traditional Crafts, Local Markets, Shrines, and Hot Springs — An Autumn Walking Experience for GAIA Resort Guests
Autumn is a beautiful time to explore Zao in Miyagi Prefecture.
The colorful mountain scenery, peaceful atmosphere, traditional crafts, and hot springs make the region a wonderful destination for a relaxing getaway.
On Saturday, October 31, 2026, the sixth Zao Town Togatta Kokeshi Festival will take place at the Miyagi Zao Kokeshi Museum.
Togatta is one of Japan’s traditional centers of kokeshi doll craftsmanship.
The festival will feature demonstrations and sales by skilled craftspeople, exhibitions of children’s artwork, food stalls, and community activities.
Several other events are also planned in the Togatta Onsen area on the same day.
For guests staying at GAIA Resort, we recommend combining the festival with a walking exploration of the hot spring town.
■ Discover the Art of Traditional Kokeshi Dolls
Kokeshi are traditional wooden dolls associated with Japan’s Tohoku region.
Each regional style has its own distinctive facial expressions, proportions, colors, and decorative patterns.
Togatta-style kokeshi are known for their relatively large heads, straight bodies, and colorful floral designs.
At this year’s festival, visitors will have opportunities to see craftspeople from several traditional kokeshi-making regions.
The announced guest artisans are:
- Toshinari Hayasaka — Naruko tradition
- Mayumi Niiyama — Yajiro tradition
- Teruyuki Hiraga — Sakunami tradition
- Yasuhiro Sato — Togatta tradition
Watching skilled artisans demonstrate their techniques is a wonderful way to appreciate the craftsmanship behind each doll.
Visitors may also enjoy shopping for traditional kokeshi as souvenirs of their time in Zao.
Please check the official festival website for purchasing procedures, as some artisans’ works may be subject to special sales arrangements.
■ Children’s Kokeshi Artwork and Community Activities
One of the festival’s highlights is Kokerinpic 2026, an exhibition celebrating children’s creative interpretations of traditional kokeshi.
Fourth-grade students from schools in Zao Town have created their own painted kokeshi as part of their studies of local crafts.
The exhibition, including award-winning works, is scheduled to remain on display at the museum until the end of November.
The festival also includes a marching band performance by Togatta Elementary School students, mochi-pounding activities, food and merchandise stalls, and workshops.
It is an enjoyable event for families and visitors interested in Japanese traditions.
■ Stop 1: Miyagi Zao Kokeshi Museum
Begin your day at the main festival venue, the Miyagi Zao Kokeshi Museum.
The museum displays approximately 5,500 kokeshi dolls and introduces the different traditions of the Tohoku region.
Visitors can compare facial expressions, colors, decorative patterns, and craftsmanship from various kokeshi-making communities.
Admission to the museum is free on October 31 for the festival.
