Over 50 Traditional Performing Arts Groups Gather in Tono—Experience the Tono Festival on September 19–20
The Tono Festival, one of the largest annual events in Tono City, Iwate Prefecture, will take place on Saturday, September 19, and Sunday, September 20, 2026.
More than 50 local performing arts groups will gather to present traditions that have been passed down through generations, including Shishi Odori deer dances, Kagura sacred performances, Nanbu Bayashi festival music, Sansa Odori, and rice-planting dances.
Highlights include the Tono Nanbu Yabusame horseback archery ritual, which has a history of approximately 360 years, the grand Shishi Odori group performance, and Nanbu Bayashi performed especially for the festival.
GAIA Resort will not have an exhibition booth at the event. However, we are deeply interested in this celebration as an opportunity to experience the traditions that continue to live within the local community.
Two Days of Traditional Performing Arts
On September 19, the streets around Tono Station will host a traditional performing arts parade, a grand Shishi Odori performance, and evening showcases featuring local performing arts and Kagura.
On September 20, the venue moves to Tono-go Hachimangu Shrine, where the historic Tono Nanbu Yabusame horseback archery ritual will be performed.
The sight of an archer in traditional costume firing at targets while riding at speed reflects both Tono’s history as a horse-breeding region and the skills preserved through centuries of tradition.
YouTube Livestream
The traditional performing arts parade on September 19 is scheduled to be livestreamed on Tono Television Channel 11 and YouTube.
Commentary by local announcers will introduce the background and distinctive features of each performance, allowing viewers outside Tono to experience the atmosphere of the festival.
Please check the official Tono Festival website for the latest streaming information.
Special Eve Event
A special eve event, “A World of the Tono Festival That Even Local Residents May Not Know,” will be held on Friday, September 18.
The event will introduce ways to appreciate the festival and better understand Tono’s traditional performing arts.
- Date: Friday, September 18, 2026
- Time: 8:00–9:00 p.m.
- Venue: Aeria Tono, Second-Floor Exchange Hall
- Admission: Free
- Reservations: Not required
GAIA Group and Tono
In 2025, the GAIA Group visited Tono to inspect farm-stay accommodations, farm restaurants, and tourism facilities and to exchange ideas with local representatives.
Tono’s efforts to utilize local cultural and natural resources strongly resonate with the GAIA Group’s vision for stay-based tourism and resorts that coexist with their surrounding communities.
Festivals are not only occasions to present local culture. They also pass traditions to future generations and create new connections between residents and visitors.
We hope the Tono Festival will inspire many people to discover the history, culture, and hospitality of Tono.
